A Scar Is Born

Hollywood crowd

Red Skelton said to Johnny Carson, “If you have talent, they can put you behind a brick wall and you’d still break through.”  Or as stated to Tony Randall in the movie, Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? — “Success will fit you like a shroud.”

Either way, Cinematographer Rochelle Wisoff-Fields is the Director of the FF Blog and the picture contributor.

Action!

Rochelle and I stood before the cheering crowd and paparazzi, cheesing it up for the cameras. Two more names, yes, Kansas City natives, would be added to the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Rochelle grinned, I leapt like a school girl.

“Who knew we’d actually be here someday? I’m dreaming!

“And look! We’re next to Mike Nichols and Elaine May. Awesome!”

“What say you, writing partner?”

“I’d say our ship has arrived.”

Rochelle was right. As they presented the star to Jason Sudeikis and Rob Riggle, Rochelle and I hopped back on to the TMZ Tour Bus.

    Your day will come. 🙂

  2. wmqcolby says:

    Aww, thanks, Sandra! 😉

  3. You really had me going on this one!!! Nice little twist, Kansas Man

  4. Love the title, Kent, and a perfect twist at the end.

  5. Dear Kent,

I really enjoyed this. It was almost like i was there. Loved the beginning, middle and end.

    shalom,

    Cuzzin Shellie

Well, you know, I thought, let’s have some fun. Haven’t written you and you and I in a story since the ele-gi-tibra-phant. We just may get that star one day for The Eighth Candle. Emmys or Oscars are as good as always, but right now, if it sells, we’ll split the fee. Even at half of what they pay for scripts minimum, we could live off that money. Especially me.
      I’m flat a** BROKE!

  6. wildbilbo says:

Nicely done, neat twist at the end taking it from high fantasy to thudding reality. Cheers
    KT

  7. Hooray for the two of you.. could I have an autograph 🙂 please-

  8. wmqcolby says:

    😀 We’ll sell a few on e-bay!

  9. And the winner is…. I’m lining up behind Björn for that autograph! 😉

  10. plaridel says:

oh, it’s so easy to be distracted in hollywood. i’ve been there and done that. it’s a place of make-believe after all.

    • wmqcolby says:

I have connections to the business …. not that it matters right now (I have to bring them something worthwhile to produce, after all). One happens to be my cousin. She used to work at MGM back in the day. Not that it matters now, either …

  11. Amy Reese says:

I’d like an autograph, please, oh famous one. You’re not in Kansas anymore, huh? Fun story! I had my dream going pretty thick in my story, too. Never give up on your dreams, man. I’m not!

    • wmqcolby says:

I’m with ya on that, Amy, all the way. We’re going to get there soon. I have been learning recently that success is planned, rather than hoped for. You craft a plan, stick to your goals and you get there. The question in my mind, though, is will it be all what you want it to be? In my case, pretty much so.

  12. dmmacilroy says:

    Dear Kent,

If you don’t ask, the answer’s always, NO!

A great piece that shows me that you, like your writing partner in crime, are keeping your minds young and your spirits on fire.

    Well done.

    Aloha,

    Doug

    • wmqcolby says:

Thanks, Doug. I think Eleanor Roosevelt said, “It’s better to ask for forgiveness than for permission.” Comes in handy, I’ll say that much.

As for the keeping our minds young and fiery, I quote from my favorite movie Ben-Hur:

SHEIK ILDERIM: Balthazar is a good man. But, until all men are like him, we must keep our swords BRIGHT …

BEN-HUR: … and our intention true.

      So be it.

Wanna see the script, man. When you have time, send it.

  13. Your day has arrived to write a pretty clever piece. But who is Rob Riggle?

    • wmqcolby says:

You’ve seen him a lot, he’s just not one of those easily recognized types like his buddies, Paul Rudd and Jason Sudeikis. He’s been on SNL (2004-2005), The Daily Show, you name it. He’s in several movies like The Hangover and is in the new Dumb and Dumberer movie. He’s also on Fox NFL Sunday. Done a lot of comedy.

I have met Rob twice. He and the guys come to town for the Children’s Mercy Hospital Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament.

Funny story connected with him at my work that you’ll like. My co-worker, Crystal got to put the mic on him and the director (who’s quite glib and likes to slip a joke under the table) said to her through the headset, “Hey, Crystal, can you ask Rob about the gaming? I was told it would be liquor in the front and poker in the rear.” She proceeded to ask him and then realized she’d been HAD!

  14. rgayer55 says:

I can see your faces on all the tabloids now. Although, we may need to change Rochelle’s name to give her a little more “star power.” Let me think on that. Maybe I can come up with something.

  15. draliman says:

So near and yet so far 🙂

  16. storydivamg says:

You gave me quite a giggle there, Kent. In fact, I was thinking of Jason Sudeikis and Eric Stonestreet as I read along, but you surprised me in the end all the same.

    All my best,
    Marie Gail

  17. Aw, this was just too cute. I love how you incorporate FF friends into your stories, and I do think they should give you two stars… or at least cool beverages on the tour bus. 😉

    • wmqcolby says:

There has kind of been a tradition of putting each other’s names in as a fun thing. We don’t do it often, but we squeeze it in every now and then.
When the drinks are on Harvey Levin at TMZ, it’s ALWAYS a good day!

  18. Clearly, Kansas City needs a Writer’s Walk of Fame. 🙂

  19. Nan Falkner says:

Dear Kent – gosh you guys are funny and witty and CLEVER too. Love your story and all the comments. You, Russell, Perry are 3 Peas in a pod! Good job on it all! Nan 🙂

  20. Well, reading it today, it is completely different vibe. There is a touch of sadness…well written.

    • wmqcolby says:

I wonders what you meant by sadness, then saw Mike Nichols’ name in there. Rochelle and I have been kind of like Mike Nichols and Elaine May or Rose Marie and Morey Amsterdam. But, I don’t know who’d be the straight man and who’d be the stooge. We’ll figure it out eventually.
      Thanks!
